I bought this Mamod SE2 through Ebay originally for it’s whistle but after doing some research I decided it was worth restoring. Stripdown commenced within seconds of delivery as it looked like it had been in a lake for 30 years.
The boiler and firebox were the first to be removed; the firebox had some heavy corrosion and pitting so it was dutifully submerged in a litre of coca cola and left overnight to remove the majority of the rust.

This removed the bulk of the corrosion but further work was needed to get back to clean metal, so using a dremel with a wire brush attachment I attacked the remainder of the surface rust and then a polishing stone to reveal clean metal.
The remaining parts were cleaned using a degreasing tank and disc brake cleaner this is how it looked afterwards:

Sourcing a replacement Cylinder and Piston was to prove challenging but Stilldrillin a member of the mamodforums, said he would throw some ideas around thus seeing what he could he came back to me with a no less than ingenious solution.
A rogue Mamod piston was re machined to fit the SE2 and a new piston and crank manufactured. The old style big end was mated to the con rod to make it work with my engine.

While these parts aren’t original they are close enough and work beautifully and give the Mamod a talking point and save it from the scrapheap.
